Hello
My name is Mary Roberts, I am 24 years old and have recently completed my Bachelor of Design, majoring in Textiles with first-class honours. I was born in the UK and moved to New Zealand with my family in 2008. I am a creative thinker, I love all things texture, leading me to create designs that capture the tactility of Textile Design. I have skills in Weaving, Knitting, Screenprint, Tufting, and Dye. My passion is based around colour, challenging traditional colour theory, mixing up dye recipes and using abstract painting to create colourful designs.

My Story
From a young age I felt inclined to participate more in practical projects rather than academic. This soon turned into design lead classes that channeled my creative thinking! In Highschool I loved textile, fashion and hardware classes that allowed the free flow of a creative design mind.
From here I was directed to Massey University, COCA. The creative arts has provided me with the skills and knowledge to become a practicing designer. I chose to focus on Textiles as my major due to its close relationship between material and design, focusing more on the design process rather than the end product.
Textiles is hands on and has a wide range of media to explore creative design concepts. This was perfect for me as I didn't just have one skill base I wished to follow...... since then I have had the opportunity to create multiple textile fabrics, structures and designs throughout my University experience. My skills have increased, feeling comfortable in weave, knit, screen print, print design, tufting, embroidery, digital printing and mark-making.
